Screwfix timber stock lengths: what they actually carry (and what they don't)

Screwfix is a trade counter first: fixings, tools, plumbing and electrical are the core range, and click and collect from a small counter branch is the usual way to shop there. Timber is a minor part of that range, not a main line. Checked directly against screwfix.com, they stock one CLS timber size, a range of Forest-brand treated decking boards and fence posts, and primed MDF skirting and architrave mouldings. They do not appear to stock full sheets of plywood, OSB or MDF board at all. Both findings matter if you were planning a one-stop timber run there. Below is what is actually confirmed, with a small worked cut list from the one CLS length they carry.

The one CLS size Screwfix stocks

CLS (Canadian Lumber Standard) is kiln-dried, planed studwork timber with rounded corners, sold by its actual finished size. Screwfix's own product page lists exactly one CLS product:

This is a lighter section than the 38 × 89 mm ("4 × 2") CLS that Wickes, B&Q and Selco all stock. Use it for light-duty shelving, battens and small frames, not load-bearing stud walls or anything that needs the extra depth of a 38 × 89 mm stud.

Decking boards and fence posts (Forest brand)

Screwfix's stronger timber category is outdoor: pressure-treated decking boards and fence posts, all under the Forest brand, sold in multi-packs rather than single lengths.

Screwfix also stocks Forest pressure-treated fence posts in 75 × 75 mm, 95 × 95 mm and 100 × 100 mm sections at 1.8 m, 2.1 m and 2.4 m, sold in packs of 3 to 11. Per-pack prices varied enough between apparently similar listings (likely different post finishes or cap styles) that they are not reproduced here with confidence; check current pricing for the specific post you want on screwfix.com.

What Screwfix does not stock: full sheet goods

Searching screwfix.com directly for "plywood", "OSB", "MDF board" and "scaffold board" turned up no full sheets of plywood, OSB or standard MDF board. The only MDF products found are primed MDF skirting and architrave mouldings, which are finished trim, not sheet material for cutting cabinet panels or shelving. If your project needs a full 2440 × 1220 mm sheet of plywood, OSB or MDF, Screwfix is not the source: Wickes, B&Q, Travis Perkins, Jewson and Selco all stock full sheets and are the better call.

This is worth knowing before a trip: Screwfix branches are typically small counter-format stores built around click and collect, without the yard space a sheet-goods merchant needs to stock and hand out full boards.

Worked example: two-shelf garage rack in 38 × 63 mm CLS

A small rack: 700 mm wide (outside), 900 mm tall, two shelves. Both uprights and both shelves are cut from Screwfix's one CLS size. The shelves fit between the uprights: 700 minus 2 × 38 = 624 mm.

Total timber needed: 2 × 900 + 2 × 624 = 1800 + 1248 = 3048 mm.

Cutting plan: 2 lengths of 2400 mm

Two lengths at £3.99 each = £7.98 total. A 3 mm saw kerf is assumed between cuts.

Total waste: 1746 mm across both lengths (36%). The second length only needs one 900 mm cut taken off it, so most of it comes off as a single 1500 mm offcut, useful for a second small item.

Why the waste is high here. Screwfix only sells this CLS in one length. At a merchant with two or three stock lengths to choose from, you can often pick a length that divides more evenly into your parts and cut the waste substantially. With a single fixed length, the only lever left is sequencing which parts share a length, which is what the cutting plan above does. If you are cutting more than one small project at once, batching them into a single cut list makes that fixed length work harder.
