Travis Perkins timber stock lengths: what they carry and a garden bench cut list

Travis Perkins carries a wider range of structural timber lengths than most high-street merchants: their C16 sawn range runs from 2.4 m up to 6.0 m in some sections. The tables below list what they stock by section and length, with product URLs so you can confirm stock and get current pricing (they require a trade account or branch visit for price quotes). At the end, a worked cut list shows how to build a garden bench with back rest from three 3000 mm lengths of 47 × 75 mm C16.

CLS studwork timber

Travis Perkins stocks CLS in 38 × 63 mm ("3 × 2") and 38 × 89 mm ("4 × 2") sections. Like all CLS, these dimensions are the actual finished (planed and rounded) sizes. The 4.8 m length is useful when you need to minimise joints on long stud walls or wide frames.

Section (mm, finished)Lengths stocked
38 × 63 mm2.4 m, 2.7 m, 3.0 m, 4.8 m
38 × 89 mm2.4 m, 3.0 m, 4.8 m

The 2.7 m option in the 38 × 63 mm section is useful for standard ceiling-height stud walls (2.4 m finished ceiling = 2550 mm stud, plus sole and head plate). Travis Perkins is one of the few merchants that stocks this intermediate length.

C16 regularised treated sawn timber: the key structural range

This is where Travis Perkins' range becomes particularly useful. They stock multiple sections in multiple lengths up to 6.0 m, which matters for projects like floor joists, roof rafters, or any timber member that needs to span more than 3 m without a join. The table covers the sections most useful for garden furniture, decking subframes and structural shed work.

Important: nominal vs actual dimensions. Travis Perkins labels their regularised sawn timber by its nominal (pre-planing) dimensions. A piece sold as 47 × 75 mm will measure approximately 45 × 70 mm once regularised. Wickes sells the same timber but lists the regularised dimensions directly (45 × 70 mm). They are the same piece of wood. When planning joints or fitting parts together, measure the actual piece you have, not the label. A cross-brace that needs to fit between two 47 × 75 mm (nominal) legs should be calculated using 45 mm (the actual finished face dimension), not 47 mm.

Lengths confirmed from travisperkins.co.uk product URLs, accessed 2025. Stock varies by branch. Pricing requires a trade account or branch enquiry; as an indicative guide, the 47 × 75 mm × 3.0 m was listed at approximately £9.76 ex VAT in search index data (2025). Confirm current pricing before ordering.

The 6.0 m availability in 47 × 100 mm and 47 × 150 mm is the range's main advantage over Wickes, which generally tops out at 3600 mm. For floor joists spanning more than 3 m, or long garden structures, the 6.0 m length removes the need for a mid-span join.

Worked example: garden bench with back rest in 47 × 75 mm C16

This bench is 1500 mm long, 500 mm deep, with a seat height of 450 mm and a back rest rail at 800 mm from the floor. The rear legs run full height to support the back rest; the front legs stop at seat height.

All structural parts are 47 × 75 mm C16 regularised treated sawn timber from Travis Perkins. Cut lengths are given in finished (actual) dimensions. The 47 × 75 mm stock will measure approximately 45 × 70 mm once regularised; cross-brace lengths are calculated from the actual 45 mm face dimension.

Parts list for the bench frame

PartQtyCut length (mm)Notes
Rear legs2800Floor to top of back rest
Front legs2450Floor to seat rail
Long seat rails21500Front and back, spanning full bench length
End cross-braces2410500 minus 2 × 45 mm (actual leg depth)
Back rest rail11500Runs between top of rear legs

Total length of 47 × 75 mm stock needed: 2 × 800 + 2 × 450 + 2 × 1500 + 2 × 410 + 1500 = 1600 + 900 + 3000 + 820 + 1500 = 7820 mm. Three 3000 mm lengths (9000 mm total) cover this comfortably.

Cutting plan: 3 lengths of 3000 mm

A 3 mm saw kerf is assumed between cuts.

LengthCuts from this lengthUsed (mm)Waste (mm)
Length 1Seat rail A (1500) + Rear leg A (800) + Front leg A (450)2756244
Length 2Seat rail B (1500) + Rear leg B (800) + Front leg B (450)2756244
Length 3Back rest rail (1500) + Cross-brace A (410) + Cross-brace B (410)2326674

Total waste: 1162 mm across three lengths (13%). The 674 mm offcut from Length 3 is a useful length for a centre leg or additional support rail if the bench will carry very heavy loads.

Could you do it in two lengths? Not with 3000 mm stock: the total parts require 7820 mm, and two 3000 mm lengths give only 6000 mm. However, if you bought two 4800 mm lengths (which Travis Perkins stocks in 47 × 75 mm), the total would be 9600 mm, enough to cut all nine parts with 1780 mm to spare. Whether that is cheaper than three 3000 mm pieces depends on current per-length pricing at your branch.

Comparing Travis Perkins with Wickes for this section

Both merchants stock the same 47 × 75 mm (nominal) C16 treated sawn timber. The key differences in what they offer:

For this specific bench project, both merchants work equally well: you need 3000 mm lengths, and both stock them. Travis Perkins is typically the better source for larger structural projects where you need long lengths (4.8 m or 6.0 m) or a wider range of sections in a single visit.

Plan your own cut list

Once you know what Travis Perkins stocks and in what lengths, the next step is working out which lengths to buy and how to cut your parts from them with the least waste. For the bench above, three 3000 mm lengths is the answer. For a different project, the right combination of lengths will be different.

SawReady does the length-selection arithmetic: enter your parts, set the stock lengths Travis Perkins carries, and it finds the most efficient buying plan.
