How this calculator works

Area math alone underestimates real sheet counts, because parts do not always nest onto a rectangle even when their total area fits. Three shelves of 2200 × 450 mm add up to 99.77% of one 2440 × 1220 mm sheet by area, yet only two fit, the third needs a whole second sheet. This calculator runs the actual nesting: it places each part on a sheet with kerf between cuts, rotates parts where that helps, and opens another sheet only when the current one genuinely cannot take another part. The number you see is the number to buy.

What the inputs mean

  • Sheet size. The full sheet you plan to buy. The standard is 2440 × 1220 mm (8 × 4 ft). Pick any preset or set a custom size.
  • Kerf. The strip of material each cut removes. A typical circular saw blade is around 3 mm, a track saw a little less, a panel saw at the yard usually 3 to 4 mm. Default is 3 mm.
  • Part dimensions. The finished size of each part in millimetres, plus how many of that part you need. Duplicates go on one row with the quantity, not on separate rows.

Worked example: garage shelves

Try it: a garage shelving unit, 900 mm wide, 450 mm deep, 1800 mm tall. Two side panels of 1800 × 450 mm, and four shelves of 864 × 450 mm (shelf length is the overall width minus two 18 mm panel thicknesses). Enter those two rows on a 2440 × 1220 mm sheet with a 3 mm kerf and calculate. The answer is 2 sheets, and the layout leaves large usable offcuts on both sheets.

The area shortcut agrees here: total part area is 3,175,200 mm², one sheet is 2,976,800 mm², so 1.07 sheets before a waste factor. Multiplied by 1.2 that rounds up to 2. The two methods match for small projects with few parts, and can diverge sharply on bigger cut lists.
