Jewson timber stock lengths: CLS and regularised sections for trade buyers

Jewson is the main trade builders merchant across the UK, and their timber range reflects it: longer stock lengths, more structural sections, and pricing tied to your account and local branch rather than a single national list price. How Jewson pricing works

Jewson does not publish a public price list. Pricing on jewson.co.uk requires you to enter a postcode or select a branch, and trade account holders receive negotiated rates that can differ significantly from counter prices. This is normal for a trade merchant: if you are buying regularly, register a trade account, as it gives access to better pricing and delivery options.

For one-off DIY quantities, Jewson branches will sell to the public at counter price. For comparison purposes, the section sizes and lengths below are what matters: once you know what they stock, you can get a quote at your local branch or online.

CLS studwork timber

Jewson stocks CLS (Canadian Lumber Standard) in the two standard sections used across the UK building industry. CLS is kiln-dried, machined on all four faces with rounded arris edges, and C16 strength-graded. The dimensions on the label are nominal (the rough-sawn size before machining); the actual finished sizes are smaller.

The 4800 mm length is a key difference from DIY sheds. B&Q and Wickes typically stop at 3000 mm for CLS; Jewson's 4800 mm sticks let you cut two 2306 mm wall studs from a single length with minimal waste (see the worked example below). For high-volume stud wall work, buying 4800 mm lengths and cross-cutting on site is faster and usually cheaper per metre than buying pre-cut 2400 mm sticks.

Regularised C16 carcassing and joist timber

Regularised timber is sawn softwood that has been planed (regularised) to a consistent finished size on the two wide faces, giving a uniform depth for use as joists, rafters and structural carcassing. Jewson stocks a full range of regularised C16 kiln-dried treated sections. The nominal sizes (how the timber is ordered) are given in the table; the actual finished dimensions are slightly smaller after regularisation.

A note on ordering by metre run. Jewson (and other trade merchants) often quote regularised carcassing by the linear metre rather than by the piece. When asking for a quote, give them the section (e.g. 47 × 100 mm), the total meterage you need, and your preferred length. They will work out the number of sticks.

Sheet materials

Jewson stocks a wider range of structural and joinery plywood grades than a DIY shed. All standard sheets are 2440 × 1220 mm. They also stock handy panels at 1220 × 610 mm and 1830 × 610 mm in several thicknesses.

The Brazilian pine structural plywood is the workhorse grade for roofing, flooring and general structural sheathing. For workshop shelving or cabinet carcasses where a cleaner face matters, the eucalyptus or poplar-core hardwood grades are worth the extra cost. Birch plywood at Jewson is a better quality product than the "hardwood plywood" sold at DIY sheds: the voids are smaller and the face veneer is more consistent.

How Jewson differs from B&Q and Wickes

Three practical differences:

Longer lengths. The 4800 mm CLS stick and the extended regularised carcassing range are the most useful. For a stud wall build, fewer longer pieces means fewer joints and less handling.

Wider structural section range. Jewson stocks regularised joists up to 47 × 225 mm. B&Q's CLS tops out at 38 × 89 mm. For a proper floor joist or roof rafter, Jewson is the correct source.

Multiple plywood grades. Jewson separates structural, joinery, marine and birch grades clearly. A DIY shed will typically sell one grade of "hardwood plywood" and leave the rest to chance.

Worked example: workshop partition stud wall, 3000 mm × 2400 mm

A single non-load-bearing stud wall: 3000 mm wide, 2400 mm tall, studs at 400 mm centres. All timber in Jewson 47 × 100 mm regularised C16 treated kiln-dried (actual size approximately 45 × 95 mm).

Stud length calculation: the wall is 2400 mm tall. The sole plate and head plate each sit full-width (3000 mm stock lengths, no cutting needed). Studs span between the two plates. Each plate is 47 mm nominal depth; studs = 2400 minus 2 × 47 = 2306 mm.

Number of studs: studs at 400 mm centres in a 3000 mm run, with a stud at each end, gives positions at 0, 400, 800, 1200, 1600, 2000, 2400, 2800 and 3000 mm = 9 studs.

Parts list

Stud cutting plan from 4800 mm lengths

Each 4800 mm stick yields two studs: 2306 + 3 mm kerf + 2306 = 4615 mm used, 185 mm waste. Nine studs need five 4800 mm lengths (giving ten cuts: nine studs and one spare, which can be used as a noggin or blocking piece).

Total waste: 5 × 185 = 925 mm across all five sticks (4%). The spare 2306 mm cut from stick 5 can be used as a horizontal noggin, a door-frame head or any other short structural member in the same wall.

Full order for this wall

Order from Jewson (section: 47 × 100 mm regularised C16 treated KD):

3000 mm length: 2 pieces (sole plate and head plate, no cutting required on site).

4800 mm length: 5 pieces (stud cutting plan above; each stick yields 2 cuts of 2306 mm with 185 mm waste).

For noggins (a single horizontal course at mid-height to stiffen the wall), add 8 pieces of 306 mm (400 minus 2 × 47 = 306 mm). These fit comfortably within a single 3000 mm length with very little waste.

Why 4800 mm rather than 2400 mm for studs? Nine studs from 2400 mm pieces would require 9 lengths, each with 94 mm waste (2400 minus 2306). From 4800 mm you get the same 9 studs from 5 lengths (one extra cut is a bonus), and you handle fewer pieces on site.
