Ace Hardware lumber sizes and stock lengths: 2x4 prices, plywood panels and a firewood rack cut list

Ace Hardware is the neighborhood store most people can reach in ten minutes, and for a quick project it often beats a trip across town to a big-box yard. The lumber selection is smaller and the prices run a little higher, but the sizes are the standard ones, and a "2x4" here is the same 1-1/2 in by 3-1/2 in board it is everywhere else. The tables below list what Ace stocks, the real finished sizes, and current prices from acehardware.com. At the end, a worked cut list builds a sturdy firewood rack from just four 2x4 studs for around $30.36, and shows why the obvious way to buy the lumber costs a whole extra board.

Dimensional lumber: nominal vs actual size

Pine framing lumber is sold by a nominal name that is bigger than the board you carry out. The rough-sawn stock is planed smooth and dried, which shaves it down to the finished size. A 2x4 measures 1-1/2 in by 3-1/2 in. Plan every cut around the actual size, not the label on the rack.

Stock lengths and prices

Most Ace stores are compact, so the everyday lumber is stocked at 8 ft, the length that covers the widest range of home repairs and small builds. Larger stores with a full lumber yard carry 10, 12 and 16 ft lengths and pressure-treated stock as well, but do not assume a longer length is on the floor until you have checked. The prices below are per piece for kiln-dried pine.

Sheet goods (plywood handy panels)

This is where Ace differs from a big-box store. Rather than full 4 ft by 8 ft sheets, most Ace stores stock smaller precut plywood panels that fit in a car and are easy to carry: 2 ft by 4 ft and 4 ft by 4 ft are the common sizes. They cost more per square foot than a full sheet, but for a small job you buy only what you need and skip the panel saw.

Does Ace Hardware cut wood to size?

It depends on the store. Ace is a cooperative, so each location is run locally and sets its own policy. Many stores will make a few straight cuts on lumber as a courtesy, and stores with a lumber yard often have a panel saw for breaking down sheet goods. Others have no saw at all. Call ahead if a cut matters to your plan.

Where a store does cut, treat it as rough sizing, not finish work. The tolerance is loose and it is meant to get a board or panel into your vehicle, not to deliver square, exact parts. For anything that has to match closely, make the final cuts yourself with a circular saw and a straightedge, a track saw, or a miter saw.

Worked example: firewood rack, 45 × 33 × 14 in

A simple outdoor firewood rack: 45 in long, 33 in tall, 14 in deep, all from Ace 2x4 studs. Four uprights hold the stack off the ground, four long rails run front and back at top and bottom, and four short runners tie the front and back together and form the base. The short runners are cut to 14 in, the uprights to 33 in, and the long rails to 45 in.

Cutting plan: four 8 ft studs

Four 2x4x8 studs at $7.59 each = $30.36 total. Each stud is 96 in. A 1/8 in saw kerf is assumed between cuts. The trick is to put one rail, one upright and one runner on each stud, which fills it almost exactly.

Total waste: 15 in across four studs, under 4 percent. Each stud carries 45 + 33 + 14 = 92 in of parts, plus two 1/8 in kerfs, for 92.25 in used and 3.75 in left over. Four studs give all twelve parts.

Why not just buy a stud for each kind of part? The obvious way to shop is one board per part type: studs for the rails, studs for the uprights, and a stud for the short runners. Two 45 in rails fit on one 96 in stud (90 in plus a kerf), so the four rails take two studs. Two 33 in uprights fit on one stud (66 in plus a kerf), so the four uprights take two more studs. The four 14 in runners all fit on a single stud. That is five studs at $37.95. Putting a rail, an upright and a runner on the same board instead drops it to four studs at $30.36 and saves $7.59, a whole board, because three parts that fill a stud leave far less waste than two parts sitting on their own.
