Lowe's carries the same core building materials as any big-box home center: dimensional framing lumber, and full 4 ft by 8 ft sheets of plywood, OSB and MDF. The catch that trips up new builders is that a "2x4" is not 2 in by 4 in, and a 4x8 sheet is your best value only if you can actually use the whole thing. Dimensional lumber: nominal vs actual size

Framing lumber is named by a nominal size that is larger than the finished board. The rough-sawn stock is planed smooth and dried, which brings it down to the actual size you measure on the shelf. Plan every cut around the actual size.

The standard full sheet at Lowe's is 4 ft by 8 ft, which is 48 in by 96 in. That one panel size covers plywood, OSB and MDF. Smaller project panels are also sold for easier handling, at a higher price per square foot.

Does Lowe's cut wood to size?

Most Lowe's stores will make straight cuts on lumber and full sheets at the panel saw, often with the first cuts free. Treat it as rough breakdown, not finish work: the tolerance is loose and it is meant to make a sheet fit in your car, not to deliver square, exact cabinet parts. Policy and precision vary by store.

For parts that must match each other closely, make the final cuts at home with a circular saw and a straightedge, a track saw, or a table saw. Have the store break a full sheet into rough pieces first so it is easier to load and handle, then trim to exact size yourself.

Worked example: 12 closet shelves from one 4x8 sheet of 3/4 plywood

A run of closet or garage shelving: 12 shelves, each 30 in long and 11-1/4 in deep, in 3/4 in plywood. A full sheet is 48 in by 96 in. A 1/8 in kerf is assumed on every cut. The plan is two stages: rip the sheet into long strips the depth of a shelf, then crosscut each strip into shelves.

Four strips, three shelves per strip, gives 12 shelves from one sheet. The shelves use about 88 percent of the sheet; the leftover is one 2-5/8 in wide full length offcut plus a short end off each strip. One 3/4 in sheet at $54.98 works out to about $4.58 per shelf.

Why not buy the smaller project panels? A 2 ft by 4 ft project panel (24 in by 48 in) looks easier to carry, but a 30 in shelf only fits once along its 48 in length, and only two 11-1/4 in strips fit across its 24 in width. That is just two shelves per project panel, so 12 shelves need six panels at $22.98 each, which is $137.88. The single full sheet at $54.98 does the same job and saves $82.90, because the 30 in shelf tiles cleanly into a 96 in sheet but wastes 18 in of every 48 in panel.
