Home Hardware is the dealer most of us can get to without a long drive, and for a weekend build it usually has what you need on the floor. The lumber is the same kiln dried spruce you frame with everywhere, but the rack labels can trip you up: a "2x4" is not actually 2 in by 4 in. Dimensional lumber: nominal vs actual size

Spruce framing lumber is sold by a nominal name that is bigger than the board you carry out. The rough sawn stock is planed smooth and kiln dried, which shaves it down to the finished size. A 2x4 measures 1-1/2 in by 3-1/2 in. Plan every cut around the actual size, not the label on the rack.

Stock lengths and prices (2x4)

Home Hardware stocks 2x4 in standard even foot lengths plus two precut stud lengths. The precut studs are shorter than 8 ft on purpose: a 92-5/8 in stud with a single bottom plate and a double top plate frames a standard 8 ft ceiling, and the 104-5/8 in stud does the same for a 9 ft ceiling. The everyday framing 2x4 is kiln dried spruce, usually stocked in an economy grade and a straighter #2 and better grade.

Wider dimensional lumber runs to longer lengths for joists, beams and deck framing. Prices below are for standard kiln dried spruce, the usual framing grade.

Sheet goods (4x8 panels and handy panels)

The standard full sheet is 4 ft by 8 ft, which is 48 in by 96 in. Home Hardware also stocks smaller handy panels (often 2 ft by 4 ft and 4 ft by 4 ft) for people who want less to carry and cut. The handy panels cost more per square foot, so a full sheet is cheaper if you can use it.

Does Home Hardware cut wood to size?

Home Hardware is a dealer owned co-operative, so each store is run locally and sets its own policy. Many stores with a lumber yard will make a few straight cuts on lumber or break down a sheet on a panel saw, sometimes free for the first cuts and a small charge after that. Smaller stores may have no saw at all. Call ahead if a cut matters to your plan.

Where a store does cut, treat it as rough sizing, not finish work. The tolerance is loose and it is meant to get a board or a full sheet into your vehicle, not to deliver square, exact parts. For anything that has to match closely, make the final cuts yourself with a circular saw and a straightedge, a track saw, or a table saw.

Worked example: garage shelving unit, 36 × 18 × 72 in

A freestanding garage shelving unit: 36 in wide, 18 in deep, 72 in tall, with four shelf frames stacked up the legs, all from Home Hardware 2x4 studs. Four legs run the full 72 in height. Each shelf frame has two long rails that run the full 36 in width and two short rails that fit between them, cut to 18 minus 2 × 1-1/2 in of rail thickness, which works out to 15 in.

Parts list

Total 2x4 needed: 4 × 72 + 8 × 33 + 8 × 15 = 288 + 264 + 120 = 672 in.

Cutting plan: eight 8 ft studs

Eight 2x4x8 studs at $4.95 each = $39.60 total. Each stud is 96 in. A 1/8 in saw kerf is assumed between cuts. The long legs are the hard part to pack, so each one shares a stud with a short rail, and the remaining boards each take two long rails plus a short rail.

Total waste: 4 × 8.875 + 4 × 14.75 = 35.5 + 59 = 94.5 in across eight studs, about 12 percent. The long 72 in legs are the main source of offcut, since each one leaves less than a full part's worth of stud behind it. The leftover pieces are handy for cleats, blocking or a small second project.

Why not just buy a stud for each kind of part? The obvious way to shop is one board per part type. The four 72 in legs take four studs, one each, since two legs will not fit on a 96 in stud. The eight 33 in long rails pack two to a stud, so they take four more studs. The eight 15 in short rails pack six to a stud, so they take two studs. That is ten studs at $49.50. Mixing a leg with a short rail, and pairing long rails with a short rail, drops it to eight studs at $39.60 and saves $9.90, two whole boards, because parts that fill a stud together leave far less waste than one long part sitting on its own.
